Harmonic Fountains 하모니 분수 (Fantastic Piano Ver.2)

Each leaf is supported on the base by metal rods, which are in turn controlled by servo motors, micro controllers and take input from ultrasonic proximity sensors placed around the piece to detect the distance between the viewer and the piece. The servo motors are controlled by Arduino. When the processing unit senses motion from viewer, the leaves move and tremble like a tree waving in the wind. Each leaf has a range of motion, able to move up and down, once and repeats. There is the side effect of sound and motion when they hit each other on the way of their motion.

During class I observed an interesting phenomenon which occurred whenever the light from the projector was cast onto the professor’s body. I adapted this effect by creating a white ceramic sculpture with unevenly textured blocks or tiles which would impart a sense of rhythm and color to projected images on its surface. The images thus produced exhibited an interesting special effect. Depending on the viewer’s perspective and the angle of refraction from the projection surface a different impression and experience was perceived. Each Flash movie is a graphically visualized form of music.

This project demonstrated reactions and interactions to sound inputs.

In response to sound values registered by a computer, flowers appeared and, like fireworks, burst quickly into an almost instant full-boom on the big rear projection screen set up at IAC building. Instead of computer graphics, I decided to render the flowers to show an expressive and natural image of flowers, using the fluid, seeping tones of watercolors, one of my favorite mediums.
Do you believe in fairies?

Fairy at Night is a small box that helps us to observe a fairy in a very discrete manner. The fairy is not easy to see — she is a very secretive creature. If she were easy to see, she would no longer be a fairy, children would be disappointed with fairy tales and their youthful innocence would be lost. When it’s dark and quiet, and the door is closed, the fairy comes out and dances to music. The Fairy at Night box needs to be properly positioned in a room in order to detect the door’s opening and closing, as well as any changes in light and sound. I made it somewhat difficult to see the fairy because I don’t want to wake observers too much from their fairy reverie. ‘Fairy at Night’ aims to preserve a certain childhood innocence and awaken the heart of a child in adults.

Waltz of the Butterflies’ is an interactive screen installation which creates a tranquil, almost ‘natural’ atmosphere. There’s a picture of the quiet forest. It’s just a picture. However, when someone comes up to the screen, part of the picture turns into butterflies flying free, as if they were pieces of a puzzle. The butterflies come to life by virtue of the user’s touch (video tracking). The butterflies fly around until the user leaves. Then they return back to that part of the picture which they left initially and lose their life.

The hole in the fin can function as a water fountain. I expressed the image of a mysterious mermaid from a fairy tale that I like. The caudal fin is decorated with sparkling Cubics and beads. In contrast to Occidental images and motifs of mermaids, I showed the surrounding wave using the shapes of a traditional Oriental wave pattern.

By bringing various parts of the dolls into physical contact with each other, the dolls will speak a variety of words associated with an everyday social exchange. The dolls’ character can change depending on how they are treated. Hitting their head turns them into a bully. If they get kissed a lot, then they become more cheerful. These exchanges reflect common aspects of our social life and are good to reinforce in children from an early age.

In many movies,
people are shown going into their imaginary world and enjoying it. In the real world, however, we can’t do quite the same thing. I believe such movie daydreaming scenes are made and enjoyed because people would like to experience something similar. Creating an environment where people could relax, daydream freely, and enjoy their fantasies is what I sought to create. In fact, it is where I want to be.

How it works:
There is a sofa that has four hidden switches on it in dark room. Those switches are connected to three lights and hidden small fans. Music “Gymnopedie No.1″ from the room makes people come into the room. Depanding on how the user sit in the sofa (=which and how many switches are on), user would see different color’s of light reflection. When the switch for fans is on, the reflection would be more beautiful. Sound, light, wavering objects, reflection and a comfortable sofa creat an environment where people could daydream.

Self-made instrument with 16 IR distance sensors, built with 16 Chinese sphere lights. Each sphere has sensor and a scale. Therefore it has 16 scales, from C to C, that you can play music with. In addition, each sensor controls each speaker’s volume. It can work with from 2 to 16 channel speakers.

Using IR distance sensors which detect distance between object and sensor with an Arduino board (microcontroller), values are obtained from the sensors and the data is sent to max/msp by serial communication. Chinese light is not only for showing but also for providing light for IR sensors. Some light is necessary for detecting objects.

Sensors on my instrument represent the location of the speakers. For example, when my hand is close to the first sensor, you can hear C from the first speaker. So people can easily understand what’s going on. Hand movements cause speaker response and helps make the sound travel.

Violinistar is an interactive light installation that reacts to sound inputs.
For more beautiful and fantastic effects, there is a violinist who gives beautiful sound input to the project. Fiber optics around the player creates imaginary atmosphere when they light up. They represent stars and fireworks in the sky.

Simple live graphic effects on a computer become unexpected light show through the fiber optic installation.

BOOLEAN is a program which uses a webcamera to generate music. It was written in Processing using the Ess library.

The webcamera image is filtered, creating a black and white image. The image is divided into 12 rows and 16 columns, creating 192 boxes. A balloon floats over each box. The balloons rate of inflation depends on the amount of dark pixels in its box. When the balloon reaches a maximum size it pops, triggering a percussive sample. A new balloon of a different color takes the place of the popped balloon.

Each row is associated with a different note. BOOLEAN scans through each column from left to right. The size of each balloon determines the amplitude of the note being played. Different colored balloons produce different sounds; teal balloons produce no sound, pink balloons produce a triangle wave, and orange balloons produce a square wave.

Like the Theremin, BOOLEAN is a musical instrument which does not need to be touched in order to be played.

Soyoung Park is an artist working at the intersection of interactive and fine arts. Soyoung enjoys bringing media such as watercolor painting and ceramics together with various computer technologies to create installations and sculptures that engage viewers in an experience that goes beyond what would otherwise be conventionally possible. While barely noticeable in her creations, electronics are applied by Soyoung in order to bring an active and reactive dimension to her artwork. Her motto “90% art + 10% technology” highlights her creative vision, which endeavors to take artcraft and technology far beyond the a sum of their parts.

Since childhood Soyoung has enjoyed drawing and making things. She studied Ceramic and Glass Art at Hongik University in Seoul, Korea and more recently completed her master’s degree at the Interactive Telecommunications Program(ITP), Tisch School of the Arts, New York University.
