Sound Travel
Dec.2006 .. Performed at Diapason Gallery
Self-made instrument with 16 IR distance sensors, built with 16 Chinese sphere lights. Each sphere has sensor and a scale. Therefore it has 16 scales, from C to C, that you can play music with. In addition, each sensor controls each speaker’s volume. It can work with from 2 to 16 channel speakers.
Using IR distance sensors which detect distance between object and sensor with an Arduino board (microcontroller), values are obtained from the sensors and the data is sent to max/msp by serial communication. Chinese light is not only for showing but also for providing light for IR sensors. Some light is necessary for detecting objects.
Sensors on my instrument represent the location of the speakers. For example, when my hand is close to the first sensor, you can hear C from the first speaker. So people can easily understand what’s going on. Hand movements cause speaker response and helps make the sound travel.
